No matter the time of year, there is always something to discover on Key West. The Florida island is known for incredible adventures that appeal to a wide range of interests. Key West is also home to several memorable festivals and events, including the ever-popular Fantasy Fest. This year’s festivities are rapidly approaching, and to help you have the best visit possible, the team at Southernmost Inn has put together a cheat sheet of things to know.

What Is the History of the Festival?

This festival got its start back in the 1970s. October was generally a pretty slow time for the island, and many shops would close up for months. A group of local business owners got together to brainstorm ways to attract travelers to Key West during this slow time. They came up with having a big part, and in 1979 they threw a parade. Now consisting of more than 60 parties, street fairs, balls, and the much-anticipated parade, what started as a small yet outrageous parade has become of the popular events in the area.

When & Where Do Things Take Place?

Fantasy Fest is essentially a 10-day party at the end of October that takes over Key West. Events and parts of the festival can be found all over, from Duval Street to local businesses and more.

What to Do

The festival’s schedule is jam-packed with all sorts of activities. There are daily happenings like body painting and drag shows, as well as special events each day. One of the most popular parts of the event is the annual parade, which features floats, kinetic machines, and more. Another fan-favorite is the Masquerade March, also known as the locals’ parade. The schedule of events is subject to change, so be sure to check the website for the most up-to-date information.
