The Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade is a marvelous display of intricate and interesting artworks that are powered by the people who created them. You can find Bright costumed people walking alongside tall dragons whose legs and head move with the pedaling of a man on a bike. Beginning at five in the afternoon, creators, artist, and performers alike take their magical concoctions of plastics, papers, and metals to move down the street and present their masterpieces to all who watch on.
Keeping Memories Alive
Where all of this creative and innovative parade began is with one man, Stanley Papio. Finding beauty and opportunity in other people’s trash fueled Stanley’s welding business that he started on the island of Key Largo. He honed his skills by creating incredible sculptures and unique forms out of random appliances, cars, and just about anything left on his property. Though many wanted him to remove the “junk” from his property, he refused and continued his craft to become somewhat of a local and arts community celebrity. After gaining some popularity, his welding business morphed into a museum that has only since improved and grown and collectors even took some of his work around Europe to be viewed in the America Now exhibition with the US State Department.
